WHY WE EXIST

Twenty Eight and Six supports families with premature and critically ill babies in Portland-area Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs).

Our little girls were born at 28 weeks and 6 days. By God's grace and the wonderful team at Providence St. Vincent hospital, they survived, spending 48 days in the NICU. They are now thriving, beautiful little girls that nobody would ever guess were born almost 3 months early.

The NICU journey is an experience that no family ever expects will be part of their story and can be one of the most difficult times in a family's life. It is emotional, exhausting, and frightening - fearing the unknown - with our children, the most precious and dearly loved part of any family.

When babies are born too early, too small or very sick, their beginnings can be critical.  Many are at a high risk for developmental delays.  For families, the unknowns and long hospitalizations leave many struggling and unprepared for the challenges ahead.

We were unable to make it through this unbelievable difficult journey, witnessing the incredible support of those around us, and not do our best to support the families that are currently experiencing similar struggles we remember so vividly.

WHAT WE DO

As a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we carry out our mission through targeted initiatives:

Comforting Mom: One of the most special times in the NICU for us was the times we spent holding and "kangarooing" with our girls. Our vision is to provide light, comfortable robes that will help bring warmth, comfort and privacy for kangarooing, breast pumping, and breast feeding. We pray these robes will be a blessing to each mom that wears one and serve as a reminder that they are loved.

Connecting Families: We found that connecting with families who have been through the same struggles, experiences, journey with their own children who spent time in the NICU provided a great source of hope. Our HOPE page was created for families that have made it through the NICU to share their stories to give hope to those who are currently still struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Financial Assistance: A NICU stay can last weeks or months, and the additional expenses can quickly become a serious hardship, especially for economically strained families.  As funds are available, we aim to help families in need with non-medical expenses, from lodging and transportation to breast pump rentals and meals, so they can spend as much time as possible at the hospital with their baby and NICU team.
